(BNA): President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani met with Angela Merkel, the Chancellor of Germany on the sideline of the World Economic Forum 2020 in Davos, Switzerland on Friday, a statement said. In the meeting, Chancellor Merkel expressed support for the Afghan government’s efforts in peace process, in which the Afghans should be in the lead and involved, the presidential press office statement added. She added that the Government of Germany is eager to host intra-Afghan Dialogue and committed to supporting economy and development of Afghanistan particularly in the spheres of renewable energy and mining. Chancellor Merkel underscored Germany will continue to support Afghanistan in security area and congratulated the announcement of the preliminary results of the Afghan presidential elections, where president Ghani is the front-runner. She extended invitation to the president to pay an official visit to Germany, the statement added. President Ghani reciprocally expressed gratitude to Germany for its assistance and cooperation with Afghanistan in various areas and said he would visit the country at a suitable opportunity, according to the statement. According to another report, President Ghani also met with Faisal bin Farhan Al-Saud, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia on the sideline of the World Economic Forum 2020 here on Friday in Davos, Switzerland. Both sides exchanged views on Afghanistan’s peace process as well as the efforts made by other countries, particularly Saudi Arabia to highlight the role of Ulama – Islamic clerics – in the process, according to the statement. They also discussed mutual cooperation on exchanging information over regional terrorist networks and de-escalation of tensions in the region. The two sides also talked over expansion of bilateral economic cooperation. Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al-Saud said Afghanistan is crucial for Saudi Arabia and the country would continue to support the government and people of Afghanistan, the statement added.
