CAPS Attends EAPC Security Forum

28-29 June 2007 – in Ohrid, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council Security Forum brought together Ministers, senior officials, parliamentarians, academics, NGOs and journalists from 49 NATO and Partner countries for informal discussions on key security issues.

There were six panel sessions which addressed Kosovo and the future of the Balkans, challenges in Afghanistan and issues related to energy security. On a personal invitation from Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, Secretary General of NATO, Director of CAPS Mr. Hekmat Karzai participated in the event.

Mr. Karzai spoke at a panel titled, Afghanistan: Winning the Peace, where he emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach, involving both civilian and military components, and especially the urgency to build capacity of the Afghan authorities to deliver good governance, security and development.

The Forum location was historic, taking place in the building were accords were signed bringing a peaceful resolution to ethnic tensions in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia in 2001.
