Saifullah Ahmadzai, Senior Research Analyst, and Abdulhadi Hairan, Research Analyst at the Centre for Conflict and Peace Studies (CAPS) participated in the Regional Network of Strategic Studies Center (RNSSC) working group meeting from 20th to 23rd April, 2010 in Rabat, Morocco.

RNSSC focuses on expanding strategic interaction among institutions in the region through exploring avenues of dialogue and cooperation. It is also meant to promote strategic thinking at the regional level by disseminating collaboratively developed research, thinking and publications concerning the region particularly policy papers.

Two working group meetings, one on Water Security and the other on, Weapons of Mass Destruction and Border Security, were held in Rabat. In the water security working group, participants from various countries in the Near East and South Asia (NESA) region presented their papers on water security. Mr. Ahmadzai, was a part of the water security group and delivered a presentation on water security pertaining to Afghanistan. In his remarks, Mr. Ahmadzai explained some of the issues concerning water security in Afghanistan outlining some of the general concerns of water shortages and challenges facing water availability in Afghanistan.

Mr. Ahmadzai pointed out two main challenges during his presentation, such as the management of water resources and water scarcity in various provinces in Afghanistan. In conclusion, the water security working group decided that Mr. Ahmadzai will draft a policy paper on water security in Afghanistan and present it in the next water security working group meeting intend for July 2010.
Mr. Abdulhadi Hairan participated in the WMD and Border Security Group. This group included participants from India, Pakistan, Israel, Yemen, Egypt, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, UAE, and Morocco. The two day discussion focused on how to implement effective strategies to protect the countries from WMD and better address border security issues. At the end of this group, it was decided that each participant will write specific policy recommendations in the context of WMD or border concerns facing their own country which will be presented in the next group meeting.
